How to safely use your GenerLink

Generators are a useful tool to have during power outages, but it’s important to remember that they can be dangerous if not used properly. One important aspect of generator safety is properly connecting and disconnecting it from a GenerLink. A GenerLink is a device that allows you to connect your generator directly to your home’s electrical panel, giving you access to the circuits you need during a power outage.

Here are some steps to safely connect and disconnect a generator from a GenerLink:

1. Make sure your generator is placed in a well-ventilated area, away from doors and windows, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. 5ft away is a good rule of thumb to follow
2. Turn off your main breaker and all other breakers in your home’s electrical panel to prevent overloading your generator on startup.
3. Plug your GenerLink provided extension cord into the outlet on the generator, and then plug the other end into the inlet on the GenerLink, making sure it is securely attached.
4. Turn on the generator and let it warm up for a few minutes before turning on any appliances or electrical loads.
5. Turn on the breakers for the circuits you need, one at a time, starting with the most critical ones like lights, refrigerator, and furnace etc. Depending on the size of your portable generator you will be limited to a certain number of circuits. Larger 30amp generators will be able to handle lights, plugs, refrigerator, furnace and a burner on your stovetop. Be mindful when turning on appliances to not overload your generator.
6. When it’s time to disconnect the generator, turn off all the breakers in your home’s electrical panel first including the main breaker.
7. Turn off the generator, and then unplug the GenerLink from the generator and the inlet.
8. Once the generator is safely disconnected and utility power restored you can now turn on your breakers. Start with your main breaker, followed by each individual breaker afterwards.
9. Store the generator and any fuel in a safe and secure location, away from children and pets.
